First Blog Post

I chose to post this photograph because of the drastic contrast between the highlights and shadows. I like the way the leaves from the bush casted a shadow onto the edge of the pot and the shapes that they formed. The edge of the pot is curved so the shadows curved along the side of the pot which made a unique affect. The different gray tones in the shadows also helped to make it more interesting. When developing my photo I had to burn the bottom right corner of the photo because it was too bright. I also had to dodge the leaves in the pot because they came out black at first because the soil is so dark. I added a filter to my photo to make the photo less gray and help intensify the light and shadow. It took me several attempts to make this photo the way I wanted but once I did all of that it helped make the shadows the focal point of the photo and balanced everything out.

Excellent observations on this photo Laura. My favorite quality in this image is the shadow that curves over the edge of the pot and makes an organically abstract form. Your choice to increase contrast with a filter and to dodge for more detail and burn to darken the right edge really help lead the viewer into the image. It keeps the bright highlights and overly dark shadows from pulling the eye away from the other details within the scene.
